Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in June and the first half of 2014 

Highlights

1.  The trade data compiled by Vietnam Customs reports that in June of 2014, Vietnam’s total external merchandise turnover reached near US dollars 24.81 billion, which was 1.5% below the result of a month earlier. In which, exportation of merchandise’s total value reached US dollars 12.38 billion, which was 0.2% below the result of May of 2014 and importation of merchandise value was US dollars 12.43  billion in total, which was 2.7%  below the performance of last month. In May of 2014, trade statistics compiled by Vietnam Customs recorded a US dollars 52 million deficit in Vietnam’s trade balance.

2. From the beginning to June of 2014, Vietnam‘s trade-in- goods totaled near US dollars 140.71 billion in value terms, 13.1% higher than the corresponding period of 2013. In which, the total merchandise exports value rose by 15.3%, to US dollars 71.11     billion and the total merchandise imports value went up by 11%, to US dollars 69.60 billion from June, 2013 to June, 2014. As a result, Vietnam’s trade balance in the first half of 2014 was in the surplus of near US dollars 1.51 billion.

3. According to trade data disseminated recently by Vietnam Customs, the total value of exportation and importation by foreign direct invested (FDI) traders reached US dollars 82.72 billion in total for the first 6 months of 2014, up by 14.0 % as compared to the result of the corresponding period of 2013. Total value of FDI exportation was US dollars 43.72 billion, expanded by 17.1%. On import side, the total value of those companies was near US dollars 40.0 billion, rose by 14.0%.


 

Main Exports and Imports                        

4. In June of 2014, a US dollars 30 million downturn in Vietnam’s total export turnover, which was due to the downturns of the following commodities: crude oil (down by US dollars 350 million); telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (down by US dollars 330 million); coffee (down by US dollars 61 million)...


 

In the first half of 2014, total exports value of Vietnam increased by US dollars 9.42 billion in comparison with the result of the same period of 2013. This was because of the upturns of the following commodities: telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (up by US dollars 1.58 billion); textiles and garments (up by US dollars 1.55 billion); foot-wears (up by US dollars 882 million); fishery products (up by US dollars 771 million); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by US dollars 654 million); coffee (up by US dollars 427 million)…

5.  In June of 2014, a US dollars 348 million downturn in Vietnam’s total import turnover, which was due to the downturns of the following commodities:  iron and steel (down by US dollars 547 billion); telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (down by US dollars 87 million); wood and wooden products (down by US dollars 75 billion)…


 

For January-June period of 2014, a near US dollars 6.93 billion increase in total value of imports of Vietnam as compared to the result of the corresponding period of 2013 was due to the upturns of the following commodities:  machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by US dollars 1.86 billion); petroleum products (up by US dollars 821 million)...

Trading Partners

6. For January-June period of 2014, Vietnamese merchandise trade with trading partners in Asia was totaled US dollars 93.73 billion in value terms, which expanded by 12.0%  as compared to the same period of one year before. Trade-in-goods of Vietnam with America was followed, which reached US dollars 21.77 billion and increased by 26.2%. The values of other continents were: Europe: US dollars 20.29 billion, up by 7.3%; Oceania: US dollars 3.01 billion, up by 15.0% and Africa: US dollars 2.15 billion, up by 12.9% in comparison with the corresponding period of 2013.

7. Regarding the following Chart, the United States of America was the biggest destination of Vietnamese products with the total value of US dollars 13.3 billion in the first half of 2014; China was the second biggest one; and then Japan, Republic of Korea, Germany…

 
 

 
8. Against, China was the biggest partner exporting goods to Vietnam with the value of US dollars 12.4 billion in the first 4 months of 2014, and then: Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, United States of America, Thailand …
